It doesn’t guess.
It measures.
A DEXA scanner sends two X-ray beams through you. Fat, muscle and bone each block them by a different amount, so the scanner can tell the three apart instead of estimating them from your height and weight. Six minutes, head to toe.
It reads every point on you
The scanning arm travels from your head to your feet, working out what it is looking at as it goes — fat, muscle or bone, point by point. Your body-fat percentage is not one measurement. It is everything the scanner found, added up.
So the breakdown comes free
Because it works out every point separately, asking about one arm, one leg or your belly is just a matter of adding up a different part of the same scan. The regional numbers are not an extra you pay for. They come with it.
And the number holds still
Scan the same person twice and you get near enough the same answer both times. That is what makes it worth doing again: when the number moves between two scans, it moved because you did.
What it will not tell you
It reads your body, not your habits. It cannot tell you why your fat sits where it does, how well you have been sleeping, or what you ate last week. And it measures the fat you have, not where you will lose it from. No scan can promise that.
Accurate enough to be worth repeating.
Anything will give you a body-fat number. The real question is whether the difference between this month and last is you, or just the way it was measured.
Cannot see inside you at all. Calls a lean, muscular person overweight and a sedentary one healthy.
Tells you the total went up or down. Never whether it was fat, muscle or water.
Guesses at fat from how easily current passes through you, so a glass of water or a workout can move it more than a month of training.
Sees fat, muscle and bone directly, in every part of you, closely enough that a change between scans is a change in you.
Six minutes,
no restrictions.
You lie still on an open table. A scanning arm travels from your head to your feet. Nothing encloses you, nothing touches you, and there is nothing to feel. The whole visit, including the walkthrough of your results, takes about half an hour.

The things people actually ask.
Less than you get on a domestic flight, and a small fraction of a chest X-ray. It is low enough that radiographers stand near these machines all day, every working day. Scanning a few times a year is not an exposure worth worrying about.
Because the trend is made of individual readings. If a method wobbles by three or four points from one morning to the next, a genuine two-point improvement is invisible inside the wobble, and you wait months for a change big enough to see past it. A steadier reading tells you sooner.
No. Stay in what you are wearing, and skip heavy metal — belts, thick zips, large jewellery. No fasting, no needles, no prep. Come as you are.
You lie still on an open table — nothing closes around you — while a scanning arm passes overhead from your head to your feet. There is nothing to feel. With set-up and a walk through your results, the visit is about half an hour.
Fat responds within weeks; muscle takes longer, and bone longer still. Most people scan every three to four months, which is long enough for real movement and short enough to correct course.

Measured, not
guessed at.
Six minutes on a table, and every number on this page becomes yours instead of an example.
